The team were briefed by the head of Caduceus, the frail and elderly Joshua Meadham. He was most concerned about recent radio broadcasts from Oklahoma that seemed to emanate from a Christian evangelical church that were preaching to humans about the snake god Yig. Meadham was worried that this was a plot of manipulation by the evil Inner Night. The heroes were tasked to investigate the problem and report in for guidance on action to eliminate any threat. Meadham's man-mountain bodyguard said nothing. He just stared. And stared.
Leaving the briefing room there was shouting in the room across the corridor "You are as bad as each other! I refuse to serve either the Father of Snakes or the Mother of Darkness!" followed by an explosion.
Entering the room revealed a scene of devastation. A Caduceus scientist lay on the floor , his chest ripped open and parted, pumping blood as he was still conscious. The serpent priestess had disappeared. Presumably through the closing portal on the wall opposite. Dr Singh attempted to remove his own arm by placing it in the portal but predictably failed.
Meadham entered the room and discovered a silver dollar on the floor which flew him into a rage. Who had allowed her to get access to silver? Smashing his cane in fury across the desk he stormed out , being careful not to step into the entrails of his mortally wounded employee.
Finishing their briefing the team were played recordings of the Oklahoma broadcasts. They contained a secret message whispering to follow Yig and come to Bingham. Goncalves asked the heroes to show humanity and not unduly punish good people. Naturally the first task they undertook was to stock up on dynamite.
A day before the train would leave was spent productively:
The scrolls were investigated. They told the history of the Serpent Person citadel of Mu and a civil war amongst the serpent people. Mu is lost to them forever, transported to another dimension. It also seemed to contain a spell "Lord Tsathoggua bless us with your spawn, the formless one, to do our bidding" which required a silver flute…..
Derrick decided to read the book, the Sussex Manuscript. He shut himself in a room and came to his senses several hours later. Well almost all his senses - he was blind and then his sight suddenly returned. Lets hope it never happens again in an unfortunate moment.
Dr Singh managed to demonstrate the worst snake-handling skills in history and allowed a giant anaconda to escape somewhere in his employer's building. They'll be used to that sort of thing, being a chemical manufacturing company.
Karina did a dodgy deal with the Mafia hitman Casale. A man they say is responsible for more deaths than the Spanish Flu. And a man who has showed a lot of interest in our heroes. She also returned home to find a tasty morsel waiting for her, a putrefying piece of offal. It was almost tasty enough to eat. Almost……
Finally on the train to Bingham. They met a nice man, Mr Allen and his son Lloyd who were also off to Bingham to hear the word of the Lord.
And then they saw the dust clouds rolling towards them, engulfing the train, blacker than two midnights in a jug. And as the carriages were buffeted roughly from side to side and as the sand hissed and rattled against the sides and roof it was almost as if - in the darkness - the carriage had been entwined by a monstrous snake….
