Technically the church should be E-W too so orientate the graves with that.

Re: What's on your workbench?
Thinking on that, all the old CofE churches round here, the gravestones do face East. CofE are the only churches that have graveyards. I've read somewhere or seen, where the only exception is Vicars, they are buried facing the other gravestones, so that they are facing their congregation. Not sure at all about the town council one though.

Any old graveyards with pre 1530 graves, so catholic burials?

Well locally we have plenty of churches with graveyards that aren't CofE. But the pre 1530 burials tended to be inside buildings, so the pre 1530 in the Howff for example were inside what used to be Greyfriars. There a few in the old Monastery that are facing various directions. William the Lion's grave at the Abbey you can't tell the direction as it's a single marker.

Err, no. And it might be a question of space these days but I can’t think of a graveyard that doesn’t have the gravestones facing all points of the compass.
I get lockdown, but I get up again.

Technically, locally you have no CofE graves at all. The E is a giveaway.Shahbahraz wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 11:17 pm Well locally we have plenty of churches with graveyards that aren't CofE. Thinking on this, the village I grew up in had a norman church. Dug out old pics, all the graves, tombs etc align facing east.

I believe that the CofS and the CofI count as being affiliated.FreddBloggs wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 8:24 am Technically, locally you have no CofE graves at all. The E is a giveaway.
