I'm sure some elastic string will work. In reality the Bulldog was retired in 37 but needs must. Maybe they weren't guarding them as well as the new fangled Gladiators.

I thought about rigging and even made some sprue extrusion bits but in the end decided life was too short

You can get lycra (or similar) thread at the haberdashers. It's the same stuff as sold to aeromodellers for rigging but much cheaper. As it's got some elasticity there's a bit of flexibility built in. Same stuff works well for rigging ships too.

The South Africans were still using the Fury in East Africa in 1941 & apparently the Yugoslavs still had them too.
