It appears he was quite a talented officer and was rapidly promoted into staff positions in India, after making a bit of a name for himself in the Austro-Hungarian army. I did wonder if the "post-mortem blame heaping" at his door was a result of his Indian connections; not sure exactly when, but at some point around this time it became the norm to only allow the top 10% of each year at Sandhurst to apply to the Indian Army - post-Mutiny perhaps?
