A couple of people on the LAF have mentioned drawing chits to decide initiative rather than dicing for it. The bonus would be the element of uncertainty about knowing which tank activates next. The drawback would be that there would be no bonus for being an ace or saving a wild dice from the previous turn. Maybe the bonus could be replaced by allowing the player to declare a re-draw. Of course, if the tank drawn is entitled to a bonus he could block the redraw.

There’s some very good research on the web for Caunter as to if it was real. I seem to recall it wasn’t really used? I seem to think it was a misinterpretation of black and white photos. Or I could be completely wrong and that was a red wine fuddled dream

Haven’t seen the need for chits, tbh - the dice-for-initiative system seems to work fine, and as you mentioned, the ‘Ace’ rules and ‘banked’ dice work well with the dice system, no fudging required.

The real clincher for me is this... it’s not
always a huge advantage to go first.
Say the dastardly Hun goes first... but rolls nowt but 2’s & 5’s.
He has accomplished sod-all, but has done so in a smart and decisive manner.
Plucky Tommy Atkins trundles up dead last having stopped for a brew, but rolls Yahtzee and does whatever the hell he wants.

It was ever thus. The hun always got to roll first. But mid 1945, there were many more poorly dressed yobs in battledress drinking coffee and schnapps in Berlin than well dressed gayboys in boots, leathergear and Hugo Boss outdfits drinking bitter in the pubs of London.

I prefer drawing chits (especially in card-driven games, such as Sharp Practice 2, as you can't shuffle those tiny packs of cards well enough to get variety in the "draw"). This thread contains a couple of ideas for retaining some advantage for "aces" or players reserving a six (although I've yet to play a game of WaT where anyone did that) - I particularly liked the one that involved giving an extra chip to any player(s) in either of these categories.

Actually, there were probably quite a few of those - all of them recently-released PoWs.
