He spent 6 months under Hobart's command before taking command of 11AD. I suspect that Hobo had a fair bit of say in that inspired decision.

Absolutely. He was the man for the hour and, like Alanbrooke, it was a shame he didn't get a combat job. He could have setup the funnies and given the parcelling out to an engineer.

I'm reminded of Patton's quote about dying for your country. Hobart was a great Tank commander and his baby 11th Armoured, once Roberts was allowed to use it as he and Hobart intended, the best Armoured Division in Europe.
