you need to start a shde (at least) lighter anyway with them, black dulls them down too much.

I'd go for the best of both worlds and undercoat white with a black wash over the top.

On my 6mm SYW I use black undercoat and then paint the figures with clean lines leaving black between colours.

I also use Gloss varnish to brighten the figures up. Works for me.

I find it kills blues and reds with a black undercoat, but each to their own.

Very nice figures.

Yep. I always go several shades lighter on 6mm. To compensate. Otherwise they just blur into dark blobs.
