Thanks for the comments. I was thinking of undercoating white, plastering them with apothecary white, drybrushing white highlights and then adding contrast colours to the non-white areas. which then makes me wonder if I wouldn't just be better using a grey wash over the undercoat instead.

I've tried some apothecary white on some figures and thinks its friggin horrible

yeah, I haven't been impressed. It also seems that no matter how much I shake it (2 steel balls in the paint and an electronic shaker), it still has a sludgy deposit at the bottom.

Incidentally, who makes a 28mm steam yacht? I was thinking African Queen or a Sudan style paddle wheeler, but not too large.

African Queen is an easy model to make. dunno on the side wheeler.
