Of all the things I hate painting, Highlander socks are definitely right at the top of my list!

Sadly no dice for these chaps! The hat-bands were apparently just plain white (and the pompom matched the blue of the bonnet - very boring).

Don't say that - at a quick glance it actually looks like you've done the cross-over squares a darker red, which is damned impressive at that size. Not much room on a 15mm sock!!!

Poor show by the regimental clothier (or a cheapskate Colonel.....). So are they the 77th or the 78th?

Yes, I put a red dot on the crosses, along with a red garter.

They're meant to be the 87th (Keith's), but the facings were almost certainly green, not buff. Most sources say 'green or buff' and Kronoskaf shows green facings, though with a buff regimental colour! Maverick Models then did the colour as buff, so I went with that, despite having found an officer's portrait clearly showing green...



Currently doing the 88th (Campbell's), who again are described as 'green or buff', but my Maverick flag is green, so that's what it'll be.

I'm not proud...

Re the bonnet-dicing: I'm not sure that it was really a 'thing' at this time. Pictures I've seen of the regiments in America show plain red bands. Though I've not really read into the topic.

Another thing that's slightly confusing is the colour of piper's coats. The usual sources suggest reversed colours, though some illustrations show red coats and I've previously read that pipers were classed as 'combatants' and not therefore entitled to reversed colours. Anyway, I've hedged my bets, doing the 87th's piper in red and the 88th's in reversed colours.

Pipers were paid out of the colonels money, so hiw whim on uniform (not offivcial musicians).

The green is interesting in that green dyd of the 1700s, goes a mustard brown/buff colour with age. So a green flag. 100 years later hanging in its church will have changed colour.

Always use contempory paintings if possible.

Yes, as mentioned above, I'd already found a portrait of an officer of the 87th with green facings, but my only flag was buff and I have no shame... The 88th have green, so unless they can get close enough to tell LXXXVII from LXXXVIII on a 15mm flag, nobody will know.

The 88th Highlanders (Campbell's). With any luck, these will be the LAST Highlanders I will ever paint, in any scale, for any period!

Also in this period Bagpipes were not exclusively Scottish, the Sussex Regiment had pipers....
