ECW: something different

Lately, the wargaming has focussed on re-creating historical battles but I felt the need for a change of pace. So a game of “Hidden Objectives”.

The premise is simple: the table has 5 central features (hills, villages, local strong points) labelled 1-5. Each player chooses 3 tiles from a double set of numbers ie 2 X 1-5. These are his objectives for the game. They are known only to him, but of course, his opponent may have some of the same objectives.
The game was to feature the ECW English Royalists and their Scots Covenanter opponents.
The table begins bare of troops:

The English are strong in quality cavalry:

The Scots have a lot of artillery:

The Scots send out scouts:

The English seize the villages. Are they Objective?

In the end, the Scots are outmanoeuvred & as night falls, they retreat:

The game wasn’t very bloody but had a definite purpose as part of the sparring for position before a major battle.

Good looking game. Nice to see something that isn't just 'line em up and fight'.

What rules are you using?

Field of Glory: Renaissance.
I was quite pleased that they're so familiar, I went to the rule book twice in the game.

We actually got through 12 game turns in a little under 4 hours.

It's supposed to be the best of the FoG sets. I think I have a set somewhere on the shelves. And a ton of P&S plastic purchased for next to nothing across various Warlord sales. It's not something that I have seen played locally, so the chances of me being motivated to paint.. vanishingly small unless I find a local opponent.

I much prefer this kind of game to historical refights.

Your collections are a wonder to behold, Donald.

I think you're very much in "Victory without quarter" and "Beneath the lily banners" territory up there, aren't you? Based purely on interest in competitions (for which the FoG:R rules are very good, I might add), it's not fertile ground for FoG:R, so you'll need to build both sides, I suspect.

You are pretty much right Baron. I may have to cast the net wider. I fancy doing TYW, rather than yet another Wot3K force.

TYW has, as I'm sure you know, a wonderful spread of potential armies from the Slavic & Ottoman fringes to the mainstream Imperials & Swedes.

If I didn't have more figures & armies than is good for me, I'd be tempted to create a small but elite Swedish force under A.G. to take on all comers.

Who doesn't have more figures and armies than they need?
