Tweaking rule sets: the madness!

Post by ochoin »

We have a couple of Zulu Wars games scheduled for tomorrow. Hlobane & Dartnell's Recce (pre-Islandlwana).

We haven't gamed using 'The Men Who Would Be kings" rules for 18 months, so in preparation, I dragged them out to revise.
To my shame, I noticed they came with 2 pages of my closely written amendments.

Now please note: these are IMO great rules. It all comes down to my mad preoccupation with tweaking rules.
We will go back to the rules, as published, for tomorrow.

So, the 'Standing House Rules' are being discarded (save three: a rule for mounting/dismounting Horse units as TMWWBK's doesn't have any, an amendment allowing "Double Time" only every second turn & a prohibition against interpenetration of units).

I will add, there are 3-4 scenario only modifications which stem from the unusual situation that both scenarios involve only mounted Imperials.

My experience of rules mirrors that of cars in my youth. As soon as it is clear that they are fit to play, it becomes clear that they are in need of little modifications to improve performance. Next thing you know you are driving an unrecogniseable hotrod.

Our club's approach to rule mods is as follows:
!. No rule mod may be introduced mid game;
2. The rule mod must be written as if it was to be inserted eg: P12, para 7, replace "Mounted troops may....". with "Regular cavalry may .....".
3. The exact wording is discussed and may be changed by consensus;
4. A vote of interested parties determines whether the change is added to our addenda document.

A simple majority may revoke the mod at any time.

Some parts of our more commonly used rulesets are almost impossible to recognise.

And then there are agreed clarifications.

Is there a wine list?
Kein Plan überlebt den ersten Kontakt mit den Würfeln. (No plan survives the first contact with the dice.)
Baron Mannshed von Wreckedoften, First Sea Lord of the Bavarian Admiralty.

BYO to our club. If I get rich I'll start a foundation to have a building with a sommelier and a decent cellar.
