Limbers

I'm bogged down, painting 4 limbers, riders & teams.

I like painting but limbers are always hard work.

I know - & appreciate! - why some people don't bother but I think (in order); they add realism, create necessary battlefield clutter and serve as a needed marker for guns when on the move.

Are you limber-driven too?

I like to have a limber as a marker for a moving gun, but I scale them back in size.....no six horse limbers for me, and four horses are as rare as hen's teeth.

I've always liked the look of them on the table, but the extra expense, time and effort needed to field them was always a disincentive for me. However, I've completely equipped my 10mm ACW armies with limbers.

Well, they're rather nice.

They do look nice, they also give depth to an artillery battery, meaning you either deploy yoour guns forward or have to move troops laterally around the limbers (artillery batteries could extend some 500m back from the gun position with limbers, caissons, smithys et al) but they are a PITA in the larger scales. My dad painted one limber per 3 or 4 gun battery to give an idea. Of course, the devotees of COTOTS can paint the whole shebang.

They can have a use in smaller scale games. In AZW & Sudan games, we've used them as barriers or parts of barriers, to hold back the hordes.

I think it realistic enough that a pack animal, living or dead, would slow down an attacking warrior & provide some level of protection.

Thanks for reminding me that I still have the limbers to paint for my classic napoleonics.
