The Loose Association of Wargamers

Of course I understand why such unlikely opponents sometimes appear on people's wargaming tables, we prefer, when possible, to have historical clashes.
So our Mycenaeans fight the NKE or Hittites, the Carthos oppose the Polybian Romans etc. And my Late Romans will take on the Saxons.
I've managed to complete their small "army" of just over a 100 figures with these 12 Foederati representing Gothic mercenaries (Newline 1/72 figures):


One of my pals is readying a pigeon pair of similar sized forces of Normans & Moors. I'm pondering whether my L. Romans who are not unlike Byzantines in appearance & troop types, couldn't be used against them without offending too much history?

I was concerned that this was a "fantasy" first outing for Shahb's King Pussy. Bit one-sided, but given the rule on new stuff almost always routing in their first battle, starting them off with an easy one has a lot to be said for it.

Yet another splendid army in a proper scale, Donald. I'm positively oozing respect in your direction.

Thanks. They get their second outing in two weeks. Something simple: defend a river crossing from a huge bunch of invading Saxons.

I'm thinking if I want to use them against my pals' Normans or Moors, I could just acquire & paint a command stand of notably Byzantine appearance? The rest of the "army" might look not quite right but this might quell any sensibilities about using Late Romans (Western) as early Byzantines.

thanks for the probably not deserved compliment.

My L. Romans are only about half Newline metals (the bolt shooters & crew are Tumbling Dice).
The rest are plastics. Italeri Gothic cavalry & L. Roman infantry match the (large/1/72) Newline stuff perfectly. I've also used some HaT (cataphractii, light & medium cavalry). They are very good figures but, at 20mm, a bit small.

See here a unit of archers of mixed Newline & Italeri figures. Can you see a difference? I can't.



I'll do some photos from the game in a fortnight.

I imagined the difference would be rather pronounced. It isn't at all.

I really, really, want a plastic 1/72 army now.

Jeez, no need to get personal, Iain. I will admit to frothing at the mouth occasionally & biting the odd dog but there should be no stigma attached to my mental health concerns.
