moritum et glorium

Post by ochoin »

Anyone come across this Ancient rule set?

We've used Field of Glory for years & if we moved to MeG, we'd want a seamless change ie no-rebasing & same unit size.

I've read some reviews & it's the latter that worries me. Adding a couple of bases to existing units is not feasible.

Any other comments on the mechanisms etc are welcome.

I'm also looking at this - I think base sizes are the same....

Why can't you add a few bases to a unit?

Some units were made years ago so getting figures & painting in the same style is difficult/impossible.

I'm still reading and looking at reviews & the MEG website.

It seems a very interesting rule set. I do like the free, downloadable army lists.

I'm wondering how much flexibility you might be allowed: I'm not a tournament gamer. So, for example, making an army lists' javelin skirmishers bow armed? Or allowing 9 bases in a unit where the maximum stated is 8?

At this stage, I’m not willing to lay out a chunk of money for something that “might” work. Or might not.
I will pursue this further.

Oh....& the biggest hurdle. If I get onboard the MEG rules will be convincing my gaming pals.

Friends have played it. If you like DBM/FoG, you’ll love it. If you don’t, you’ll hate it as much as you hate DBM/FoG

More details, please, Jeremy. What's the link?

I know the same chap as invented MeG was involved in FoG so it seems obvious there'd be some connection.
I like FoG well enough but it's a bit mechanistic, lacking flavour & a bit inevitable in its results. I was hoping MeG allowed for a tad more randomness but at the same time, allowing the better table top general to have a greater impact.

I’ll ask and let you know. I disliked DBM and all it’s derivatives and disliked FoG even more, so the minute they made the connection, I lost interest.

Will let you know

I have it, read a bit of it and put it aside again. I don't like rules that require lots of accoutrements and these seem to need coloured dice and lots of tokens. Mind you , I bought them as a deal with a PSC Late Roman army and the bendy plastic figures were utter shite so I wasn't in the best mood when I read them.

So a good investment all round, then?

The MeG website is full of information I'm working through.

I have looked at the author playing a demo game involving Caesar & the Gauls:

https://mortem-et-gloriam.co.uk/meg/oth ... ul-videos/

There are positives but I was a bit repelled by it.
Unlike the General d'Armee game videos, with the affable Dave Brown & friend, this is a rather soulless, solo exercise. Additionally, as Zen notes, the table is filled with playing aides: cards, speciality & D6 dice, charge markers & wound counters. Indeed, the focus is very much on cards & dice & not so much on the figures. The spectacle aspect of the game is not helped by this being the 'Pacto' or small version.

I'm possibly being too hard. The positives are a very quick game & it seems fairly straight forward.

I'll look at the magna (or medium sized game) tonight.
