Late Romans: a source

Post by ochoin »

I have recently acquired a pile of Tumbling Dice figures from the Late Roman period.
This means my original skirmishing force will be growing into an army sized collection in the future.

I would like something authoritative, well illustrated & not costing the earth in terms of a uniform source.
Any recommendations?

I found this, for example:The Late Roman Army by Gabriele Esposito , Giuseppe Rava but the Amazon reviews were scathing.

Was there a concept of 'uniform'?? Could you not just go for something vaguely 'historical' and then paint without getting too caught up in someone's interpretation of colours worn?....which will absolutely differ from someone else's 🤷‍♂️

Guess it also depends if you're doing Western or Eastern Empire for the Later period

if doing western, you should be able to find the shield patterns document online easily.

"Uniforms" was a wrong word to use - clothes & equipment (& weapons & shields) would be better.

I'm generally happy enough with Osprey but I thought there might be something better.

What size are these lads then?
If it turns out you're looking for a better-than-Osprey level of detail for 10mms or whatnot I will expect you to make good on that when it comes to the painting...

As someone who knows sod all about the period, but has a Justinian army waiting to be painted, I have the following books with pretty colour pictures to use when I get round to it:

From Osprey, Warrior 9 Late Roman Infantryman AD236-565 and MAA247 Romano-Byzantine Armies 4th-9th Centuries.

Also Byzantine Armies 325AD - 1453AD by Dmitris Belezos. The pictures in this have some odd proportions but the colours are all in the right places (I assume).

I too decided against the Rava/Esposito volume on the basis of the slagging it receives on Amazon.
