Looking forward to this if it's a large skirmish game. Osprey published rules vary rather a lot in quality I've found. I generally really like the Blue Book series though.

Ancient skirmish isn't an area that's been frequently covered by rule sets (he asks in his ignorance)?

So it'll be the pre-battle stuff that's usually ignored, ambushing patrols & raiding parties etc, I imagine.

Sounds good.

I'm not sure it is skirmish? Couldnt see any details. Hope it is or at least small armies. There's Clash of Spears which is a skirmish set for this period but written by Argie supporting Brit haters so I won't entertain it 😅. SPQR by Warlord too, which was dreadful in its first edition. Not sure the 2nd is any better? I've gone to and fro with basing options for my still unpainted Rebublican Romans. I'm leaning more and more to DbX basing. Had a thumb through my books yesterday and thought about making rules old school rules work for small armies, using units as a stand rather than a group of 24+ figures.

I own a number. I've never actually played any but as a (faux) rule writer, I do get ideas shamelessly plucked from them.

They are a bit hit and miss some are great some are terrible. The quality started going downhill so I am now really careful before buying any. :(

For small army battles I really recommend Neil Thomas' Ancient and Medieval Wargames. Phil and I have found it will expand as your armies do and perform just as well. Our in house amendments can be found on Phil's Blog, Olaf'sHQ.
