The Loose Association of Wargamers

I bought some of these a while back for my Spanish Napoleonics force. Warlord Games sell them as resin, but this is really like the old plastic Airfix material. Superb detail, and pretty clean mould line and flashing wise. They scale really well with the Offensive Miniatures range. Anyone else encountered this soft plastic resin?

I might get some of the Prussian Cavalry as they seem a fair bit cheaper. I'm guessing they're different to the PSC resin they use for the 15mm MeG army packs?

If they're well cast and clean mouldings then it could be good thing -avoiding the irritation of snapped bayonets. Do they take the paint ok ?

Only cleaned them up today. Will be painting them in the next few weeks. Will let you know.

Hopefully they're a better "resin" than the old GW Finecost stuff.

Mantic's version is pretty good so, as long as it's given a good wash in soapy water and well rinsed, it should take paint fine. I always undercoat resin with a non acrylic basecoat as, even when washed, i've found the surface of the bendy stuff to be a bit hydrophobic.

I've not had any breakages (yet), but the "brittle" bayonets on the Perry plastics do worry me, so in that respect, this softer plastic is an advantage. And they're not bad looking figures either - some of the Perry Napoleonic Spanish have very spindly legs by comparison, which may be accurate for representing malnourished Iberians but again makes you worry for their gaming longevity. Spanish forces for this period and scale have never interested me, but I shall be interested to see what you do with these, Jeremy.

Is it my imagination, or does the photograph of the figures in the packaging make it look like a couple of them are partly metal? (I'm assuming it's a trick of the light, or something.)

I have to admit when I bought them, I thought they were metal as I didn’t read the small print that they were resin. Then, when they arrived, I thought they were standard resin.

All the figures are this soft plastic (I’ve already based them up)

As for the Perry plastic, my French have seen quite a few games and are (touch wood) still fine.

I have a couple of boxes of those but they are a way down the queue. My main concern is how to prime them. I usually use Halfords white primer but I’m not sure how well it will cope with the flexibility. I think the ordinary acrylics will be fine as a lot of the soft figure painters seem to swear by them. Has anyone out there any tips to pass on?

With the caveat that it will probably be a slightly different formula, i've found that Mantic's soft resin (Restic) takes Halford primer absolutely fine. The only issues i've had was when priming with brush on acrylics!
