Hi,

A bit of a long story so please defer to my blog article for info. This is my latest piece for the Spanish in Italy, Italian Wars project and also The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge.

As usual the castings from The Assault Group were very crisp and required very minimal cleaning up which is always great. Bad castings can take a long time to clean up properly, especially if they have been cast in old moulds or the metal was too hot and you get "pitting", which required hours of filling in gaps, smoothing them down etc. It can be a bit of a nightmare. I'm very pleased to say that this has never been my experience with Pete's Assault Group models.

The detail on these is amazing - I'm looking at the guy next to him's coat and thinking about all the highlights- must have taken you an age?

Five days from cleaning up the miniatures to varnishing. I was in a hurry to get something admitted to The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge so I belted along as quickly as I could manage. Plus, there were only four miniatures and a few bits and bobs really. Cut time out on the varnishing too which can add eight days from glossing to matting down. I usually leave the gloss a week to settle before matting down.

At our club (Wessex), they are referred to as Taramasalata Spanish - one guy, who usually manages to field more tercios than he has pikemen for, actually uses a hoplite phalanx for one of them. Fortunately, he doesn't have Spartans.....

There's always one or two in a club

I used to enjoy the DBA/X players sitting in contemplative silence, occasionally getting up and strutting around during turns, sometimes losing their tempers over a game of toy soldiers! I cannot not then, nor do now, even begin tom understand how someone could be so serious about something that is meant to be fun.

Caveat- I've been listening to Madaxeman's podcast quite a lot of late and it seems that the tournament scene has taken a turn for the better with a more relaxed attitude towards the games.

Madaxeman is a FoG:R player - they were, and still are, as far as I know, always well-behaved. I joined their tournament circuit in 2012, having never played competition games before and without being overly familiar with the rules. All players were extremely helpful, including Alastair Harley, who won pretty much every competition.
