Is anyone familiar with the 'War and Conquest' ancient rule set?

Almost inevitably I have a copy on my shelf :D

I think that they are very good (purely from a read through and some solo trial games many years ago!!).
Rob Broom says that he took them in the direction that he feels WAB would have gone had GW not killed it off. Rob ran Warhammer Historical so he probably knows what he's talking about in that respect.

I would love to play some more "real" games of W&C as I think it's an under rated set of rules for ancient and medieval games.

Even better, after a of couple of years in the wilderness it's starting to get the online support again that it deserves and better still all the army lists are free.

Shame you're clinging onto the bottom of the world as i'd certainly travel to play the game....just not 20000+ miles :D

I'm trying to glean as much information as I can from reviews & battle reports - damn few of either.
I've been to the SCARAB site & downloaded the QRS & looked at army lists which has given me a handle of the rules.

I have individually based Late Romans & enemies but not in units the size of W&C suggested units but I don't think this will matter. Every unit needs a leader which not all mine have.....again I think I can work around this.

Obviously, I need a set of the rules. I thought ebay etc would be full of cheap, second hand copies but no........they really weren't best sellers. I'll poke around a bit more but probably/possibly order a new book this month.

If they meet my expectations, my next goal will be to convince my pals, one of whom is building medieval armies.

One thing holding me back is; if they're so brilliant, why didn't they ever catch on?

Not sure if they're "Briliant" but they certainly look like a solid set of rules.

I think they failed to catch on because they were launched when people were still very much using WAB v2 ...and the god awful cover art can't have helped :D

If WAB is not something you can get your friends into then W&C is familiar enough that they might give it a go and I reckon the two are as good as each other. I quite like Kings of War Historical as well, but that works on units rather than individual figures.

I've been having the same sort of quandry over Wrath of Kings fantasy rules. They seem like a great game but have essentially died through lack of support. At least Rob Broom is still selling and providing support for W&C.

I think Atheling posts on the W&C FB group so he might have some more insight into the rules.

Thanks for bothering to reply, Paul.

I've been emailing about this to my pals. Silence from 3 ("Another bloody set of rules from Ochoin" no doubt) & 2 have replied with vague assurances of interest....as long as I buy the book, learn the rules & host a number of games. The usual, in other words. :)

I believe if you play the same game, with the same rules & the same figures over & over, a vitality will go out of your hobby. I'm fairly sure I'll buy a copy.

http://musingswargameslife.blogspot.com/ George Anderson's blog is worth a look. He's a big fan of War & Conquest rules and posts detailed AARs when he plays a game, so would be worth a look I'd have thought.

A long time ago Meeples and Miniatures interviewed Rob Broom at length about the ruleset. The interview starts about 17 minutes in https://meeples.wordpress.com/2012/03/0 ... rettyPhoto

Conquest can be divine.

I suspect Mr Putin may have altered his opinions of these recently.
