The Loose Association of Wargamers

A planned refight of the Combat of Zinna a few weeks ago prompted me to paint a few more regiments for the Reichsarmee. They might have been rubbish, but the Reichsarmee is definitely one of the more interesting armies of the Seven Years War. The variety of uniforms and flags also helps to maintain the interest when painting them:

Although I do like the look of your 15s and of course I have some of them as well. Yet again I also have a 28mm collection as well as Prince August 40mm army's.

Cheers fellas! Yeah, the Pfalz Garde zu Fuss uniform was probably never worn in the field (except by the detached grenadier company), but there is sufficient doubt in the evidence, I have a massive stash of spare grenadiers and very little shame...

Also, I'm pretty sure that the flag they are carrying bears the arms of the Wittelsbach family, rulers of Bavaria.

They were both ruled by branches of the Wittelsbach family (Bavaria being the junior branch and Pfalz the senior). When Maximillian-Joseph of Bavaria died without issue in 1777, the Elector-Palatine of Pfalz, Carl IV Theodor (a member of the House of Wittelsbach) had a claim, but also had no heirs. Their cousin Charles II August of Pfalz-Zweibrucken meanwhile DID have heirs and also therefore had a claim... The whole thing led to the War of Bavarian Succession and union between Pfalz and Bavaria.

Thank you - did not know that. I knew that Bavaria absorbed various bishoprics and the like towards the end of the 17C, but hadn't heard about the Pfalz branch before.

By the way, had you ever noticed that, until the British seized New France and its fur trade, Catholic countries' grenadiers wore bearskin caps, and Protestant countries' grenadiers wore cloth or metal mitre ones?

Yeah, I've tried reading up on the War of Bavarian Succession and it makes my brain melt...

Yes, that's a good general rule of thumb, though there were some oddities and a few (such as Pfalz) who switched from one to the other (and back again, in some cases). I must get around to doing the Reichsarmee grenadier battalions, as they're a riot of styles and colours.

I'm going to Reichsmark you 10 out of 10 for this project.
