Lovely. I particularly liked the woman checking her fellow's head for lice.

Just for everyone's edification, there were three things that women accompanying the army were not allowed to do. One was dressing the mens' hair, the second was cooking the men's rations, and the third was any tailoring work involving items of uniform (shirts and stockings could be darned and laundered). Why? Because these jobs were assigned to the men, often specific men: typically the members of each six-man mess would take it in turns to cook the rations, to prevent the women selling some off for drink or "favouring" some men over others; the pioneers were in charge of haircuts, which were required to be of an official length and style; and the regimental tailors would attend to the uniforms, which usually required the use of official "patterns" - and they were also held responsible for saving "off-cuts" to use for any patching or other purposes.
