Lion Rampant question

My third Lion Rampant game today & it was possibly the best yet.
We used Scenario 8 from the book - the stealing of the Holy Relic. Although my ramshackle mercenary retinue went down to Dave’s focussed & determined force, it was a taut & exciting game until the end.
Highlight, our leader challenged Dave’s leader to a duel & was killed. Very dramatic!

However, a question.

Full strength units get 12 dice. Foot or mounted. Does this apply to the foot skirmish units (old Biddowers)? Seems to be a lot of fire power for such a cheap unit ie you'd probably be better to have such units in place of normal archer or crossbow units.

I'm sure I once had the same query - the answer was hidden in the text somewhere. I'll check.

Yes they get twelve dice. But they have a shorter range (12") and a higher "order" roll to take the shot than archers. (Making them 14% less likely to get a shot off each turn).
Bidowers/Skirmishers are also much more fragile than archers, having half the strength and lower armour value (except when shot at).
The bad effects of that higher shoot order roll are watered down a bit by not using the "failed roll ends your whole turn" rule though.

Yes, Paul. I do like the modified Activation rules - far less frustrating. However, it does strengthen those pesky skirmishers even more.

Certainly, if you hammer them, they'll fold easily but it sort of means this is a priority no matter what the scenario asks.

On a related note, one of my opponents is going to add a peasant-unit to his strength as he thinks, for 1 point, they'll not only be useful as a 'speed bump' but have potential to prompt unwanted Wild Charges. Cunning devil....

Unless it's the Gateway Cavalry, of course.
