Applethorpe - fictious ECW battle

Our latest ECW game was a real winner thanks to the 'Victory Without Quarter' rules we used. It was a very exciting game with constantly changing fortunes that was not decided literally until the last turn of the game.

The scenario established 3 physical objectives - a village, a crossroads & a forest path:

Additional victory points could be gained by routing enemy units.

The forces of Montrose were marshalled & ready to advance:

Opposed by King Charles' English Royalists:

The card-driven game allowed the Royalists to advance swiftly, capturing 2 objectives whilst the Scots waited for orders:

The cavalry battle on the left favoured the English:

But in the last moves of the game, Montrose's Highlanders smashed through the English, seizing an objective & routing enemy units for extra points:

Certainly is. Very pretty. It would be great to be able to play a game like that.

Nice one Donald.

Excellent looking game. I must resist jumping the ECW up my painting queue.......the other figures will mount an uprising!

That looks like a good game, Donald. Who's the Ulster mob? O'Neill's lot?

The Red Hand is an old Celtic symbol, of course. Associated with the O'Neills amongst others....including my (Scottish) clan.

I didn't know that, I thought it was Ulster and environs. But then I'm not too knowledgeable about Celtic symbology. I couldn't tell you my clan badge (McKenzie) without looking it up (again).

(Just did. It looks like a bushfire, so forgettable. The clan motto is interesting- Luceo Non Uro- I think it translates as "Lucky I Didn't Piss Myself"?)

Lots of Ulster Irish migrated to Scotland and vice versa, and close ties in the Romano British period.
