The Loose Association of Wargamers

Yesterday, Hotel Tim visited the Shed with his rather splendid WoFun 18mm AWI collection. It was a very close game but Tim and his co commander, my mate Little Dave, eventually won a narrow victory. We all agreed that it would have been a rather less narrow victory had Tim not made so many 'double one' morale rolls (I told him not too). A great day was had by all. Thank you chaps.

Was playing with "front-and-back" flats (as opposed to the "side-to-side" version used in dioramas) a wee bit weird? I have to say, it actually looks like a good game, but - and this sounds a bit odd and hard to explain - I'm not sure how I'd cope with using them.

It looks good, but fully painted 18mm 3D figures would look better

I understand the desire to be able to play games immediately without the drag of having to paint armies but it comes at an aesthetic cost.

It is, however, much better than buying armies and leaving them unpainted in their boxes/bags for decades and never using them at all.....and at the end of the day it's all about actually playing the games with other people isn't it?

When I visit my mate Old John we often play his games with a mixture of 20mm, 25mm and 30mm units (and everything in between). It feel odd for a few minutes but then the game takes over and you scarcely notice the differences. It's much the same with the WoFun flats. After a couple of moves they are just toys to be played with.

I miss the heft of proper toys (you know, the 3D lead ones), I occasionally struggled to tell front from back and, every now and then I'd knock the figures off of their bases (I think gluing them in place is the answer.

Yep, what you said. Having played with Pemps' Napoleonic and Tim's AWI WoFun I've concluded that 3D figures are for me. I've said I'd match Tim's investment if he goes down the WoFun ancients path, but that, like you say, is only because we'd have a ready made game (I'll still paint my Lamming ancients though!.......one day).

Still very undecided on that one. I prefer the 3D, and as much as I enjoy using the WoFun chaps, I am still a 3D wargamer and painter. But the pleasure in just pulling them off their frames and onto the bases and being ready to rock is fun too. The look of them on a proper table as they were yesterday, and with proper terrain works very well.

Would painting the edges give them more of a 3D look, Tim? Though the main attraction, which appeals strongly to my laziness, is not having to go near them with a paint brush.
