Painting batches

We’ve not had a pointless poll for a while.

When painting your soldiers , how many do you paint at a time? Are you doing big old school batches of thirty in production line or concentrating on a few?
Ive put zero thought into this poll, I warn you now.

- ‘I’m painting batches’ - not a Cornish saying when not wanting to be disturbed...

Depends on the scale. 28mm usually 2-3, 15mm-10mm usually 6-10, 6mm often 20-24. I once tried to paint a whole 24 figure 28mm napoleonic unit in a single batch. To this day they have fully painted trousers and undercoat everywhere else.

Generally 6 for the skirmish armies. 12 for the bigger massed battle armies

Less than a dozen generally. I did a single batch of 60 28s once, which was a killer but very effective for hitting the deadline (Ayton of course).

If I don't paint a complete unit in one hit I'd never finish anything bigger than a dozen figures.

I suspect that much depends on the painting style. Perhaps toy soldiers, like the Gateway and Dystopia stuff, are different to painting my two/three tone LoA/WSS bits and bobs which are generally smaller units.

Usually 10-12 for most games, sometimes 3-4 for more skirmishy stuff - in theory you’d see an improvement in quality for the latter but I’ve yet to spot it. 28mm obvs, there are no other scales.
Not that it’s a scale of course. Or is it? Answer using both reams of the paper

As per previous posters, in depends on figure size and ultimate purpose. 15mm are done in FoGR unit-sized batches (12 horse, up to 24 foot*, 4 generals and their entourages, or 4 guns and crews), 28mm are done in SAGA- or SP2-sized groups (4/6/8, or Warlord + extras). I'm currently thinking about getting into CoC, but haven't decided yet on 1940 BEF in France or 1941 British/Imperial in Malaya, in which case I may paint up a section/support team at a time, due to the more limited palette required.

[* If I'm honest, I don't think I've ever managed this and usually relegate it to 2 x 12s. ]

I try to paint a unit at a time for the smaller scales as a rule. However the days of doing a full brigade at a time are long gone. 28mm and the like are done in singles or small groups, usually as a break from the larger units.

A battalion at a time, all else is sin.
