What terrain for micro scales?

When you get smaller than 6mm...into the 2mm/3mm bracket, would people see it as an opportunity to produce ultra realistic birds eye view terrain, or would using historic maps with stepped hills be an interesting alternative?
I've considered both and whilst the map idea seems quite fun and a lot less work and expense I can't quite get my head around painting buildings and trees sepia!

I’d be strongly tempted by the Bruce Weigle approach

but actually the map/sepia relief items sounds quite appealing. And much faster to produce for different battles.

The super realistic approach looks fantastic but it is a lot of work and i'm sure others could do it a lot better than I would!
In 2/3mm the map approach has the advantage that the UK county series 1:2500 fit pretty well when using DBN sized bases.

Monopoly sets, everyone you can lay your hands on, you want the houses and hotels.

You can order Monopoly buildings in batches on Ebay
I think a simplified, contoured, painted board would look good for these scales. A bit like Alex's DBN boards but without the texture. Teeny buildings and panscrub trees too!

Whatever you do will look splendid, I'm sure. But please avoid large bases of troops balanced on top of a church steeple. It quite ruins the visual appeal.
