Gilly

The first of our Waterloo Campaign battles was fought to a conclusion today, using the ‘General d’Armee’ rules. The Battle of Gilly involved a larger French Corps (overseen by Napoleon himself), trying to thrust a blocking Prussian corps aside.
We'd gamed three battles using the new rules last year so it was good to get back into Naps.
A brief report:
The Prussians unexpectedly launched a spoiling attack on the French right flank, using their cavalry brigade.
Simultaneously, they seized the central village of Gilly with a Landwehr brigade.
The ferocity and unexpected nature of their moves put the French on the back foot. A battery of Imperial Guard Horse artillery was destroyed, much to the Emperor’s chagrin
And artillery & skirmisher fire pinned down much of the French force.
The French counter-attacked & their superior cavalry first stopped, then in subsequent turns destroyed or routed both Prussian cavalry regiments & their supporting artillery.
This left them behind the Prussians. In the centre, after changing hands a number of times, Gilly was occupied by the Prussians but having been encircled was more prison than fortress.
On the French left flank, their artillery brigade softened up the Prussians, while a strong brigade advanced & the redoubtable Empress Dragoons sought out the Prussian left flank, virtually unopposed.
At the stage (end of Turn 6) the game was called as a French victory.
I think it may be a good idea to re-fight this battle before moving on to Qatre Bras.
No photos were taken as I forgot to organise it...next time.
I'll post a photo of our first game using Rheinbund & Russian troops: yesterday's game looked a lot like this but with French & Prussian figures:
