Channeling my inner Essex boy I’ve been playing around with sculpts for the 42mm shiny project.
My question was regarding weapons, I’m going for a very simple almost Heyde like figure so there isn’t going to be much detail but what’s the starting point on say, a rifle? Some sort of rod or wire armature?

I find the stiffer your rod, the better.

Iain will give some expert advice on this. The sculptor guy who's course I went on recommended for weapons etc soaking a cocktail stick in super glue so that it goes brittle and then carving from that.

Or, find the rifle you want, get it cast up.

I'll try the cocktail stick described by Simon because my method isn't fool proof (don't).

I carved the 42mm rifle from plasticard. Two pieces stuck together to give the right thickness. Cut out the basic shape. Stick the barrel in place (cut a 'V' in the plasticard to take the barrel). Then just go at it, carefully, with a file. Add the fittings with your sculpting medium of choice. Thinking about it, I think I may have fitted the barrel before cutting out the basic shape.

I found it helpful to have a good look at the shape of the real thing before starting. I had a tendency to make the stock a bit too droopy (don't).

Edited.......I don't remember posting this. I certainly wouldn't recommend Irregular rifles.

You know, you could just buy a batch of 42mm rifles? I think Irregular Miniatures do them, ask Ian Kay.
