Prussian blue

There seems to be a possible range of hues for Napoleonic Prussian infantry & landwehr types - from quite a dark blue to a mid range colour.

I've tended towards the darker end of the spectrum but I have a pile of HaT Landwehr infantry & 18 Newline Landwehr cavalry to paint. I'm considering painting them in a tinted version of the normal dark blue. This would be somewhere between the usual mid blue of my French line & Prussian blue but closer to the former.

The reasoning behind this is as follows.

1. Use of captured French cloth/uniforms.
2. Fading of cheap cloth in the sunlight.
3. The lure of having units that my gaming pals might mis-identify in the heat of battle.

1/ Absolutely :) Not just captured either, sometimes just bought or given!
2/ The dye used would, I understand, fade to a grey blue not simply a lightening of the same hue.
3/ Sneaky but why not? Both countries used the same base for their blue uniforms so it's not unreasonable to think they may have looked similar during some period of the uniforms life.

As any fule kno, all armies; be they French, Prussian, Polish, British Light Dragoons & Artillery, Russian Uhlans, Portuguese... Dyed their uniforms in a common shade known as Humbrol 25.

I think that’s what EB was anticipating.

Reason 2 is the clincher for me, most of these men were out in the field without spare uniforms, modern dyes, washing machines for weeks at a time and a faded/grubby/non-uniform appearance strikes me as appropriate (and also fits my painting style  )

I'm afriad I just don't have enough free time between now and the end of the year to give this question the full consideration it deserves...

I'm the meantime, just go with whatever you think looks right...
