Remember that nonsense about paint not sticking to soft plastic figures? There were always methods but many years ago, I found a preliminary thin coat of the Vallejo 'Game Colour' white primer meant any top coat was inviolable.

But now I'm having problems getting it. Any suggestions as to what to use now?

Note: I much prefer a primer that is painted on with a brush. Non of this modern air brushing or fiddly spray cans stuff.

I use vallejo black primer for plastics and thinned matt enamel for metals but the latter makes plastic figures melt
I've also used Black Gesso never tried white but that might be an option

I use automotive spray - grey in colour from a rattle can. Generally bought off Amazon as it’s cheapest. Use it on metals and plastics and haven’t had any complaints.

I’ve used white gesso without any problems when spraying wasn't an option.

How come you chaps know so much about painting floppy plastic figures?

I have washed soft plastic figures in ammonia bleach (not hypochlorite) soak for 24 hr submerged in bleach, than add the same amount of water. wash them in water and only touch them with alcohol wiped hands thereafter.

Then I used to use thinned humbrol matt white as an undercoat applied by brush.

With my shapeways planes, I washed in bleach and then sprayed a white primer from Bunnings, worked like a charm and it avoided the sponge effect. Didn't kill the detail.

There are some primers that chemically bond to the plastic if you really want to go full plastic jacket on them

Amonia bleach actually creates surface on the plastic that will chemically bond to any paint. But plastic primers can be quite specific about what plastics they bind to.
