Painting Wood

I'm increasingly unhappy with my efforts painting wooden objects. Smaller stuff is fine, musket butts and so on I use a base of Vallejo Mahogany and highlight with beige brown. Old wood I am doing in grey with a hint of green, lighter grey wet brush and highlighted buff. What I haven't found a good colour combination for is 'newish' or treated wood. Typically this might be either new construction like a newly constructed device such as an onager, or a polished spear etc.
I am thinking it needs to be a base of a yellowish brown/orange highlighted up a yellow cream colour. Do folks have favourite 'recipes' they would like to share? I generally use Vallejo colour. I have previously had the Foundry spearshaft triad recommended, but I would rather not start a new paint brand.

That's a shame, as all three of the "Spearshaft" triad are good "wood" colours.

Well, there must be some Vallejo analogues. I will try and find a comparison chart and see what the VC equivalent colours are.

There’s a New Wood in Vallejo’s Panzer Colours, IIRC

If you are painting wood that has a texture then contrast paints are fantastic. yes it means starting a new paint brand but as they are unique...ish and would not be mixed etc... with other paints they are worth a look.

Interesting thought. Ok. I might try one for an experiment. I have a large ox wagon to paint, so that's an opportunity.

I've used 'Snakebite leather' and 'Wyldwood' so far with good results for 'brown' wood obviously there's greys etc... for weathered wood too.
