10 Desert Island Books

Post by Ilkley Old School »

Each day I am going to post a hobby related book that I would have on my desert island.

Book 1 - the book that started it all.

First wargames book I ever "read" (actually, spent almost an hour ogling in Hamley's to be strictly accurate); the second was Charles Grant's "The Wargame (which I would imagine is also on your list - sorry for the spoiler!).

Battle for wargames Charles Grant
The Wargame Charles Grant
Uniforms of the Wellingtonic wars, Funcken and Funcken
Oman can't remember the title
Los Campagnes de San Martin - can't remember the author

Thinking about the rest, but Sydney Jary's book is competing with Bowlby's recollections.

Hustler. January through October.
I might drop October in favour of ‘Concise and easy to understand instructions for escaping a desert island. No tools required. ‘

I originally had this out on loan from the Ham Branch Library before buying my copy for 55 shillings from Tradition in Piccadilly. I worked for a my gap year in the same library in 1975/76. I got to order the books. It probably had the best selection of Wargame books in the whole of London.

It was the sight of Stadden Prussian Grenadiers, painted as the Erbprinz, that must have woken Purps up.
