Here's how I base my stuff. PVA and sand, painted with Iraqi Sand, washed with thin sepia and then highlighted with pale sand.
I've added a bit of cat litter, a few odd stones, some light green static grass and occasional wild grass or brown tufts

Don't forget that "the sand of the desert" also has to be "sodden red" on occasion!
