Went for the second one, and ordered a "St Brendan of Clonfert" figure to accompany my SAGA Normans, all for the same postage.

So nah-nah, nah nah naaah to the feckin' lot o' yas!!!! Still find it odd that nobody in the UK makes something like this.

(The reason I was being so snarky about the tax & RM kidnap ransom was because I believe the threshold for paying it is £18 including postage, and the Novus Designs well, with postage, was £18.48. Given my previous luck with customs duties I wasn't going to risk being stung for whatever (20%?) + £8 for the sake of 48 pence. The purchase from Stronghold came in at £26 including VAT at only 19% AND with two useful figures.)

I believe VAT is due on goods purchased from outside the EU where the gross value is more than £15. The gross value includes the cost of the goods plus carriage, plus insurance and plus duty (you don't pay duty where the goods, plus carriage and insurance totals less than £135). It's the same VAT you would be paying to an EU VAT registered trader (subject to the prevailing rate of VAT) and only a fraction less than the VAT you indirectly pay to a trader who isn't registered for VAT - roughly equivalent to the VAT on the profit margin in fact.

The £8 is the amount the Government feels happy for you to pay to its agent so that it doesn't have to employ a few civil servants.

I am sure that adding say £1 to the duty would easily cover the cost of contacting recipients directly for payment before releasing the item for delivery. It was always meant as a way of adding revenue to the Royal Mail rather than a genuine, necessary service.

But, to be fair, if importing goods over a certain value it's a given that VAT is due and that there will be a handling charge. If we add VAT and £8 handling to the costs when ordering the goods there would be less disappointment.

You occasionally have to pay VAT/import on a small % of your toy purchases. Those unfortunates in other countries have to pay postage, which often exceeds the cost of the item, wait 4 to 6 weeks for something that may never arrive, and then pay VAT and duties on EVERY shipment.

You seriously don’t know how good you have it! Take it from someone who had to do this for 29 years.
