AGWA weekend RNAS Museum Invasion of Cuba 1762

Post by Willz the Wargamer »

On a bright sunny Saturday morning 8 fellow chaps from the
Armchair Generals Wargamers Association met up at RNAS Museum Yeovilton to refight the Invasion of Cuba and the siege of Havana 1762.
Using my Spencer Smith figures and rules by Paul Robinson with adaptations by me. I also had 8 packs of action and event combat cards printed to enhance the game.

"The Siege of Havana 1762".

After the failure of the first British landing, the French have landed a force to support their Spanish allies.
The British have enlisted the Prussians and landed to the East of Havana and caused several breaches in the walls of the city and are ready to assault.
Meanwhile a British / Prussian landing force by barges is attempting to out flank the Spanish / French to the west of the city.

Start of game.
The Spanish / French must have 2 battalions of infantry in Fort El morro and at least 1 battalion in each of the other forts, except Fort Lazaro which is held by British / Prussian forces. The British / Prussian forces are laying siege to Havana, Fort Chorea and carrying out beach landings at Fort Comijar and Fort El morro.

The British and Prussian Commanding Generals.

British supported by some Prussian forces are to carry out flanking attacks by amphibious landings near Fort Comijar and Fort El Morro on the island of Cuba, several battalions have been allocated for this action.
Prussian forces have already laid siege to Havana City and have captured Fort Lazzaro.
Half the naval fleet is demonstrating in force on the other side of Cuba to draw off Spanish forces.

Mission
British to land on beaches around Fort Comijar, Fort El Morro and capture these forts as a precursor to aid the Prussian attacking forces assaulting Havana city. Prussian forces are to capture Havana City, Fort Punta and Fort Chorera. Whilst defending Fort Lazzaro.
You will be supported by several naval ships.

The Spanish Governor General and French General.

Prussian forces have captured Fort Lazzaro and are laying siege to Havana City.
British forces are expected to carry out an amphibious landing somewhere on the island of Cuba, probably at Fort Comijar and surrounds.
Our forces are spread thinly and reserves will be held in the centre of the island.

Mission
Defend all forts, Havana City and defeat British forces on any and all landing areas. Retake Fort Lazzaro at the earliest opportunity.

I took 300 photos so I will post a selection and let the photos tell the story.
We managed to play the game twice and swapped sides In both games the British successfully landed and although they didn't necessarily take all the objectives, the Spanish would struggle to remove them.
The Prussians took Havana twice and got a good kicking on and around Fort Lazzaro, overall the Spanish were looking as if they would lose Cuba.
An excellent two days of gaming.

Surely all the Prussian allies had to do was lay out their towels in all of the strategic locations and - hey, presto! - island captured?

That looks an absolutely spiffing game - can't wait to see the next batch of photos!

The fortifications are particularly splendid - a tremendous effort all round. I really must get down to see one of your games.

Cheers for your kind comments chaps.
It was a great weekend with great company and gentlemanly gaming.

We plan to run a WAS / SYW game using 28mm figures at the same time in 2026.
