Basing my Spencer Smith cavalry?

Post by tim.w »

I'm conflicted, x2 on a 50x50 or individually in movement trays?

Need examples.

Depends if you want to do mass battle, skirmish or both. I’d do single basing in a movement tray

Jezza makes a good point, but some SS cavalry types are a little top heavy so I'm pleased I went for multiple basing.

How many figures do you have in a unit, Tim, and is there any reason why you're thinking of multiples of only two?

Do your rules need a few singly based figures, as a loose change, for casualties ?

I would go for 2 to a base but I like my cavalry boot to boot so 50 by 50 is a bit to spacious particularly for SSMs

I almost went for individual bases on the warbases trays but the Hussars particularly might need a bit of stability. Currently I have 3 Cavalry units of 12 horses each. I imagine units will be anything from 12 - 24 as things progress? Infantry units are between 36-40 in current format.

I'm not basing with a particular rule set in mind. I generally dislike prescriptive basing.

Having said that, I'm looking at adapting Tim's Rally Round The Flag rules, if they even need adapting. We had a good simplyfied set for our last ACW big game that worked well.

Good size units then.

I wanted to make the same point as Mark - 25mm is a very generous spacing - but I couldn't remember what frontage I'd given my cavalry. Just checked and its 60mm frontage for three figures, with a depth of 50mm. There are plenty of pictures of my cavalry on the forum, just search on "routing" and you should find them.

I use 60mm frontage x 50mm depth for three figures if heavies or two figures if lights/skirmishing cavalry. Each Regiment has at least one single (and a base of two if heavies) for casualty removal.

I also use 60x50 for my cavalry. 3 to a base
