Role Playing Corner

Post by goat major »

This thread may die horribly amongst lack of interest, derailment and puns but here goes anyway

Firstly some definitions
Not roleplaying Purps-style in a Frederick the Great gimp suit
Not roll-playing EB-style by dremeling the dice to always roll 6s

but RPGs - D&D and its myriad spawn of descendants

Like many of us I played a lot of these in my youth (i.e. a very long time ago) and thought they had pretty much died out when Magic the Gathering appeared. Apparently not - this year a combination of loft clearing (where I rediscovered all my old books) and some great podcasts (Grognard Files being the best) made me realise that its actually still huge and probably more vibrant than ever.

There are re-launches of old classics (Runequest has just come back with seemingly great success, D&D 5e is getting good reviews), perennial favourites (Call of Cthulhu has been number one since forever) and a whole host of innovative new games (e.g. Blades in the Dark where you play heists in a fantasy city, Nights Black Agents - spies vs Vampires, old and new Judge Dredd systems and a hundred others). Also this is the internet age so online play is definitely a thing - there's a free system called Roll20 that facilitates online games - a sort of super-skype with character sheets and player maps and dice rollers etc.

Does anyone still play RPGs ? interested in playing again ? I know myself and Jeremy have been slowly getting back into it. Anyone else ? would there at some (distant) point in the future be enough of us to set something up - -either online or face to face ?

Not for two and a half decades, but I'd love to re create that atmosphere again. How do you reckon the Villagers of Feni Island would go playing D&D?

I would love to do a bit of RPGing. Having played for something like 15 years I stopped about 20 years ago.

I started out playing MERP and Traveller, moved onto Rolemaster, WHFRP, Cthulu and D&D (Where the high point was playing the whole Dragonlance campaign and accidentally killing one of the other main characters when they fell off a floating island!)

I still have MERP and D&D and probably WHFRP. More recent purchases, for interests sake, have included the Firefly universe RPG and a sourcebook for the same.

Some LAW RPG would work with a weekend or perhaps evenings/extra day at a longer regular event.

Skype type rpg could be kinda fun. I'm not sure how I could get into it.

It’s seems pretty good Grizz - though perhaps takes a bit of getting used to. Have a look at the roll20 site or some of the demos on YouTube .There’s a scenario for Pulp Cthulhu set in Borneo as well...

Hell, they'll be finding Cthulu on Feni Island next. That'll put Mimfin on his arse.

The people of PNG have a great history of "stori". They come into camp exhausted after a day's work, eat, drink tea or coffee and then sit up until their white boss yells FFS go to bed at 03:00, waking up at 0600 for brekkie.

I reckon they would be ripe for RPGs.

That's also on the cards. Apparently I am going to have a private army of four armed cops and four armed security guards. I greet this news with all the enthusiasm of a rabbit for a snake.

My experience is that when the shit hits the fan, you need a riot squad with the works. Until then you have well paid, healthy young chaps in uniform and they shag everything going to the detriment of community relations.
