I role played throughout my student years, which including the OU and postgrad courses has lasted from September 1985 to the present day. I am currently enjoying the old school delights of Basic Fantasy Role Playing which is an OSR retro clone of D&D, available for free online or a couple of quid on Amazon.
I used to play MERP a lot but other players began to get scarce so we went on to Call of Cthulhu. Alongside those we played a heck of a lot of Tunnels and Trolls, WHFRP, Stormbringer, Runequest, Dragon Warriors, Palladium, Legend of the 5 Rings, Bushido, Star Wars RPG, Paranoia and Twilight 2000 among dozens of others. To be honest I prefer role playing to wargaming but it is easier to find one opponent than a party of RPGers of my own age group these days.
Role Playing Corner
Re: Role Playing Corner
Thanks to Simon, my love of Runequest has been rekindled. I started with the D&D Red Box and Star Frontiers as a youngster. Then took a break and got into Runequest into my teens and through to my mid twenties. Not played it since. We played a bit in New Glorantha, however most was done in the Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms. Some of my best memories of my youth and I’d love to get back into it. The new Roll20 app does look promising.

I was going to mention Roll20. Been on there for a while and never done anything with it.
Re: Role Playing Corner
I played most of them back in the 70's, 80's & 90's & have the rulesets to prove it. Admittedly we only ever looked at Chivalry & Sorcery once before closing the lid quietly and backing away as it looked like very hard work.
I've dug out the Black Box (& supplements) for Traveller & occasionally use it with the kids now that they're old enough. I'm also getting all the Runequest reissues but that is more for nostalgia than for any real desire to run a group again. 2nd edition was the best RPG ever IMHO.
The other one that I use from time to time, mostly for inspiration, is Call of Cthulhu (not the TFL CoC, although a mash up might be interesting),
I'd like to get hold of a copy of Paranoia, as that was the source of much amusement amongst our group. It was less of an RPG & more of a manual for modern bureaucratic life!

Re: Role Playing Corner
This sounds very interesting, and appeals a lot. Most of my interest in fantasy and sci-fi gaming comes from RPGs, which I first got into nearly 40 years ago (ouch!).
D&D was the mainstay, with continuous campaigning over a lot of years, followed by MERP and Rolemaster. Most of my 25/28mm Frostgrave figs come from this era and it's been fun re-painting some of them.
We also tried using Laserburn as a combat rule set to support sci-fi role-playing. Naturally it usually degenerated into a massed shootout with little role-playing.
I'm in, happy to try new/old stuff.

Re: Role Playing Corner
Frostgrave is RPG Light so it would fit in nicely.
Re: Role Playing Corner
I have never done any of this.
I wouldn’t mind trying though.

Clearly Purps did not read GM’s definition in the opening post

Like Purps, I've never indulged in RPGs (either dice-powered or shoulder-launched). I put this down to a mix of (a) being an anti-social fecker in my teens and early 20s, and (b) not wanting to give women yet more reasons to not go out with me.

Re: Role Playing Corner
I have never found a girlfriend who would wargame, but I had two girlfriends who came to D&D and once held an alcohol and dope fuelled week where I acted as dungeon master for 5 girls. I always imagined that one day we would all be bringing girlfriends but, only one other woman attended our RPGs.
