20mm squares and 120 x 40mm trays are the way to go. if you can get a horse on a 40 x 20mm base you can use the trays for infantry or cavalry. I will have pics of my first unit of shiny C18th soon.

I've just remembered that my 18thC is already shiny. Based in close order.
