I used drawing pins. Two different sizes. The slightly more raised pin goes in the middle to act as the spindle, four slightly less raised pins go round the outside to act as skids. Works brilliantly.

It's not sad at all - i love setting up a solo game. And it means you don't have to spend hours arguing with EB.
But the downside is that you learn nothing.
