80 Years War

Post by tim.w »

Some lovely articles in WWS this momf and its got me looking at the 80YW, had no idea about it previously. Always avoided anything between 1500 and 1700 like the plague, like the kind of plague that plagued this era. Didn't know what a Tercio was until this evening, assumed it was a Spanish Landschnect or something.

I'm quite gripped now, possibly since its such new ground to me. Not sure if I'll go as far as figures but if I do they'll just be a few 15mm.

There does seem to be a lack of rules for the period unless I'm missing something? Pikepersons Lament obvs.

Anyone done any Elizabethaning or similar?

Thirty Years War or ECW rules would do at a pinch, particularly for the latter part of the war (which blended into the TYW). A more specifically renaissance set would be better for the earlier parts, which were the heyday of the tercio & similar pike heavy formations.

The only Elizabethening I've done or do is 28mm Border Reivers. A large chunk of which were painted by the esteemed Mr Hall. I had harboured some thoughts of expanding the collection to include figures to fight some 'what ifs' based around the Armada but never got around to it.
The Border Reivers may well be the game to Christen the new 'War Room' next month.

As for rules that depends on whether you want to play skirmishes or big battles. I tend to go skirmish with the 28mm so can only really suggest Pikemans Lament, En Garde (which has list for Reivers) and a variant of LoToW.

I think that melon headed cats would have been seen as whitches familiars and hunted to their deaths back then.

Nah, just keep the cloak’s hood up and scurry a lot.

Done a bit in this period, contemplated a lot more.

Currently working on an armada setting that will use Pikeman’s Lament and a Similar one for ECW - but both of these are small scale skirmish games.

The biggie is a Tudor vs Valois game for Henry VIII’s invasion of France and for that I’ll use a slight adaption of Lion Rampant - can’t recommend this blog highly enough:

apart from the gob-smacking eye candy there’s some good ideas on updating Lion Rampant and some excellent historical research.

DBR might be worth a look for bigger actions - I did dabble with the 80 Years War quite some time back and planned to use DBR, I gave up when other shiny things beckoned. Although the idea of using Dutch troops on ice skates still appeals.

If you want a few figures a side skirmish then En Garde might suit. I picked up a set at Crisis and they look very usable.
I get lockdown, but I get up again.

There are two new Osprey MAAs on this conflict - #510 and #513 - by Bouko de Groot and Gerry Embleton.
