28mm 1930s/40s Naval Crews & Weapons?

Post by RMD »

A friend just gave me this, as he thought it might come in handy for VBCW. Anyone know who produced it? He's no idea where it came from, as someone gave it to him.

I'd also like to crew it and arm it, so can anyone suggest some suitable 28mm naval crew and/or deck weapons? It's for VBCW, so I'm not too fussy about nationality, as long as they look vaguely 1930s and European. I'm already aware of several ranges of RN, Kriegsmarine and Soviet sailors equipped for infantry actions. I'm thinking more along the lines of crewed deck guns, Lewis Gun mounts and that sort of thing.

I thought I might make it 'modular', with various drop-in decks and weapon loads that could be slotted over the cargo-hold.

It's occurred to me that I've placed the wheelhouse the wrong way round... :)

Pulp ranges (as Buff notes) are a good place for all sorts of these kind of figures.

I'd say so. Rather a nice model.

Try the Empress Miniatures early WW2 range - they have 3 packs of "matelots" and you can use the other packs (BEF in puttees) as Royal Marines. No artillery crews as far as I can see, but you can always get Martin converting them......

You could try the Copplestone Castings Darkest Africa stuff, but I think it's a bit too obviously 1890s for your purposes. The Perry "Sudan" range has a couple of artillery packs (SB13 Gardner Gun and SB19 Gatling Gun) with men in various positions that would be of use generally for artillery. There's also a command pack (SB14), in which the officers all have pith helmets, which means a head-swap could very easily make them 1930s.

Warlord also sells an early war British naval section, which includes poses that could easily be converted to gunners (they also do some of the Heath Robinson/post-Dunkirk "weapons" that could just as easily have been invented in 1936):-

Yes, it's the Minimi 'Clyde Puffer'. Not a company I've heard of before.
