Thank you very much indeed. I think I have enough examples now, for which I'm much obliged to one and all.

Jezza - can you do me a favour and check your cavalry frontage? It seems a little narrow, or I'm misreading your comments or something.

May I ask.......

You may...

(1) Close order foot
a) How many figures do you have in your units,

30.

b) How many bases is that,

5 lots of 6 on 50mmx50mm bases.

c) When formed in line, what is the total frontage (I'm assuming a depth of two figures per base is standard).

250mm. However all units have a battalion gun with a frontage of 33.33mm so total 283.33mm

(2) Close order horse
a) How many figures do you have in your units,

Well... either 12 or 15 or something in that range...

b) How many bases is that,

4 x 60mm frontage bases. Or 5....

c) When formed in line, what is the total frontage (assuming you form your cavalry in a single rank of figures).

240mm or 300mm or somthing else. And all that may change before the next game....

(3) Open order troops
a) Are your open order troops on a permanent open order base

No. Not at the moment. But that may or may not change....

b) How many figures in a unit

12 except for one unit of 18...

c) How many to a base

Currently 1.

d) How big is the base?

Individual 25mm square or round.... If they ever go on a multiple it will likely be 50mm frontage. Or 60mm...

Oh yes, sorry. I had forgotten.

In my Shed version of the Rank and File rules, all my LoA/WSS units are nominally treated as having six bases. It fits with how I've organised my units and it means a D6 marker can count down remaining bases, while the colour of the dice indicates the unit's quality. It works very well, provided units are all about the same size(admittedly, cavalry is a bit of a fudge). Gary's foot battalions are quite a bit bigger than mine but, fortunately, so far he has generously agreed to over look that in our games.

So it's not a particularly satisfactory situation even now and, given the diversity of unit sizes and basing choices we have between us, it would be daft to carry it over into a WAS/SYW variant. So, I thought it would be a splendid idea to get an accurate picture of what's out there.

R&F rules work on a base count and I wasn't sure how to step up between 6, 8, 10 or 12 base units, or whether such a broad sweep of options was necessary. Armed with your stats, it seems on first sight that frontage is a preferable measure over figure count and that, probably, three different base sizes will be enough.

It was a useful exercise for me and I'm very grateful for everyone's help.
