Think these are Essex. Any ideas exactly what, please?

I'd take a guess at highlanders, tying up the kilt wasn't unheard of.

I concur. The forward-swept quillions on the sword, and the ‘targe’ shield look typically Sweaty Sock to me.

Sword, shield and skirts would tend me towards Scots.

It's not the kilt that was tied up. The plaid was removed and the long shirt underneath was tied up like some sort of weird 'nappy' (and to stop thistle rash).
