I think the thread where EB asked for peoples basing conventions turned up that most people are in the region of 15-20mm Frontage per foot figure and 20-25mm depth. So a six figure multibased element (two ranks of three)would be between 45mm and 60mm frontage and 40-50mm depth.
I'd go for the smallest sizes you're happy with for your figures and keep the frontage at least as big as the depth.

Paul has it right. You'll probably also wonder about how many figures in a unit.

I'm still struggling with me thumbs, but in the meantime, have a look at the first post on page one.....re 18thC unit size.

As Paul has said elsewhere, the upper base width of an 'average' unit will probably be less than I give there.....but worry not. Do what you like and we'll accommodate you. If it helps, most people have foot units of between 24 and 30 figures mounted two deep on five or six bases.

Rich, if you could do yours on S shaped bases with sloping sides, that would be nice.
Otherwise, it might depend on the size of your chaps. Slim SS tend to fit three wide on a 45mm, a souter figure might need 60mm. It matters not.

Base sizes have been discussed so I'll not repeat them. But....

When faced with this sort of dilemma it is often wise to set up the battalion on a footprint drawn on paper and see how pleasing it is to your eye. Try different frontages and depths and pick the combination you like most, which is the most important criteria. Do the same for your cavalry and I'm sure you'll settle on something very close to what the majority of people have done.

Once you've got the spacing you like, probably shoulder to shoulder or boot to boot, decide on the number and style of basing.....four or six to a base (or, as Peeler has done, fifty or sixty to a single base - or so it seems) or perhaps something more old school, like one, two or three to a base. Most of us go for the fours and sixes in two ranks for close order foot and threes and fours in a single rank for horse.

Lots of people base skirmishers individually. You could go for pairs or, as I have done, triangles of three (I know, I'm a genius).

You're entirely on your own with guns and gunners. I'm saying nothing because no one likes what I do.

I've got my Spencer Smiths/Minden/Crann tara on 45mm frontage, for three figures wide (although I might move to 50) But my Perrys needed to be on 60mm Frontage bases (for three figures wide).
I put skirmishers two to the same size base as I use for six Line.
