2000 plus options was the standard size for armies when I was doing the competitions. So it's an ideal size. All my armies will be around 2000-2200 points.

RE Your Unit size query: I found an old army list which included a 40 strong Unit of Fyrd, a 24 strong Unit of Huscarls and a ten man unit of heavy cavalry plus Skirmishers and Characters.

Thanks Paul. I’m kinda settling on 32 man for the Gauls and 16 - 24 men for the Cartho’s.
