15 mm ACW Basing - Fire & Fury

Post by vexillia »

Thanks to a recommendation from someone on here (I think) I'm now working on some fine ACW figures from Warrior.

As they are small 15s I thought I'd get away with the standard 1" frontage bases. When my new bases arrived I got a shock despite a (cursory) check with some cardboard test bases before ordering.

There's so little width, fitting three infantry is a struggle and it just looks wrong: plenty of space front to back and none side to side. Plus the 1" depth for cavalry is just crackers! I'm switching to 30 mm width and 20, 30 & 40 mm depth bases. I'm assuming that the extra 5 mm width won't significantly affect game play.

Anyone else come across this problem?

With Brigade F&F I believe the idea is to stagger the infantry so they appear as a deeper line. That'll fill the base nicely. Andy will have some nice piccies. I've not seen a coherent explanation of how figures based for Brigade F&F transfer across to Regimental F&F. In RF&F units can form two bases deep, which of course will look rather deeper that two ranks if the figures are staggered as per BF&F.

You can't get the cavalry on an inch deep base? I'll have to have a measure up of my ACW stuff.

I don't think a little difference in depth will make any difference at all. Frontages matter of course, but it would be sorry state of affairs if players can't agree to a little jiggery pokery when appropriate.

Hello...

All my stuff (well, most of it...) is 2nd Gen Minifigs and I use the standard basing of 1" by...some size I can't remember but it's the deeper option...

I want to try Reg F&F but I've been put off by the look of two ranks of the bases I use. You can count one base as two but that is a record keeping faff... But when playing Brigade the 3 fig deeper bases I think look fine on the table.

My local club play BF&F and they went 30x30 with 4 figs in 2 ranks only because the guy who kicked off the project had a huge pile of spare 30mm MDF bases! I've played with my figures with them and it's no big deal...

I like the Warrior stuff. It fits well with the older Minifigs. I think the sculptor was the same?

Thanks guys. Useful feedback.

Looking around the web it appears people do all sorts. I found one group that use 25 by 15 mm for 3 figures. He's even used Blue Moon castings which are sold as 18 mm! This made me try another dry run but the figures I have still look crap at 25 mm or 1".

I staggered mine, looks better I think.

Of course if you’re painting both sides choose a width that suits you :D
I get lockdown, but I get up again.

I think I need mine in 4rs and dismounted cavalry in 3s but basing was for guns at Gettysburg or the later Pickett’s charge - can’t recall the dimensions and am away at the moment so cannot measure. I do recall though it was in proper mm size not those old fashioned American sizes :cowboy: :D
