This may have pre-dated Normandy, as there is a Tiger 1 in the Tank Museum at Bovington, which was effectively put out of action with a hit to the turret ring during fighting in N Africa, the consequent deformation of the hull causing the crew to "abandon ship".Subedai wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2017 6:09 pm I distinctly remember one veteran mentioning that because the Sherman main gun wasn't that effective against later German tanks, they used to aim for the turret ring as soon as they were in range. I can't remember him saying how effective the tactic was but I'm sure it must have been interesting.

So what we’re basically getting at is that when my CoC force is ready for its first battle, it gets rerolls on any failed shots on German armour.
Cheers.

I think numbers helped a bit too. Shouldn't it be called 'Lots of Shermans vs a Panther'?

Not so much in this case, although that was the overall situation. These blokes seem to have done rather well without General Motors and General Foods.

Could also have been the 9th or 10th Panzers.
Strangely the highest rated British Armoured Division from Normandy on, was 11th Armoured, technically the least experienced of them. Pip Roberts leadership and Percy Hobarts training had a great deal to do with it.

Re: Sherman vs Panther
According to a quick bit of research, the 24th were part of 8th Armoured Brigade, and prior to the action on 1st July at Rauray had been in action against Panzer Lehr and 12th SS. On 1st July they were counter attacked by a German kampfgruppe, comprising panzer grenadiers of 19th and 20th SS Panzergrenadier regiments and armour from 9th SS (Frundsberg) panzer division, a fairly recently formed unit transferred from the Eastern front. It also appears that despite the success reported here, the 24th was disbanded shortly after, because of their losses, and it's remaining personnel transferred into other units . The operations were part of Operation Martlet.

Interesting that although it was a wartime-only unit (formed in 1940), it was allocated a Regular line number - albeit not related to the 24th Light Dragoons; same thing with the 27th Lancers, an armoured car regiment (1941-45).
