Paper flags

The last thing I'll add to a figure is the store-bought or photocopied paper flag.

It was brought to my attention that some/many/all people actually varnish these (with a matt, I assume).

Is this so? Why? What brand of varnish should I use to varnish flags retroactively if it's worthwhile (*not* spray on, at this stage).

I tend to spray varnish all my flags, if only because I mount my flags before I varnish the figure. I do think it helps protect the ink if they are printed flags, but I have no conclusive proof of this.

As to brand, well no self-respecting wargamer would ever use anything less than Testor's Dullcote, available in very few good model outlets in spray or brush varieties. All other varnishes are fart-breath from beelzebub’s bum-hole.

I soak my flags in PVA so that I can shape them. I don’t add any varnish.

I use inkjet printed flags for some of my units. To avoid problems with colours running when I shape them with PVA binder I use a light spray of army painter anti shine on the flags before cutting them out of the sheet. I don't varnish them again and have had no problems with them.
