I actually remember when my Mum discovered exotic spices such as garlic & found out vegetables didn't need to be boiled into oblivion. To be fair, she only cooked as she'd been taught.

Food became a lot more interesting as the dear woman actually uncovered a flair for cooking. We ate no more bland mince and totties after that.

Sadly, these seem to have been retired after the Napoleonic period...
